Challenging Behaviour and Coping Strategies

Content:

 

  • Understand the need for a person-centred and strengths-based approach to support the well-being of individuals with challenging behaviour

  • Understand some of the underlying causes of aggression or hostility and how they may be perceived by others, families, other visitors, colleagues

  • Understand the need to protect the individual with challenging behaviour from abuse, injury or harm and any adverse effects on others

  • Understand some of the underlying causes of challenging behaviour ( i.e. triggers for outbursts)

  • Understand some of the underlying causes of challenging behaviour ( i.e. triggers for outbursts)

  • Understand some of the common explanations and myths related to challenging behaviours

  • Understand the processes of dementia and its bearing on challenging behaviours

  • Understand the use of A B C Charts in monitoring incidents and identifying patterns of behaviour

  • Understand the carers role in preventing, deflecting or defusing aggression

  • Understand the need for positive and effective communication with the individual with challenging behaviour in defusing and de-escalating situations

  • Understand some ways to support colleagues who may be subjected to an aggressive or violent outburst to enable them to develop coping strategies

  • Understand the roles of staff, families, friends and associated professionals in dealing and coming to terms with challenging behaviours

  • Understand the legal and safety reasons for accurate communicating, reporting and recording in the care environment

  • Understand the use of reflection to gain perspective after an untoward incident

 

Who is the course aimed at?

 

This course is aimed at all care staff both as initial learning and a refresher.
